ORGANISATION

The concept of ARIMNet is to foster the coordination of the network participants’ programmes through a need-driven approach based on four steps, each one contributing on its own to the reinforcement of the cooperation, and at the same time providing the basis for the design of the next stages:

· Information exchange and mapping to improve mutual acquaintance and share of best practices

· Strategic orientation of research programmes to eliminate overlapping and open novel issues

· Joint activities to consolidate and harmonise partnership outline common vision and agenda

· Calls for proposals to expand the structuring impact of the network

ARIMNet is coordinated by INRA, France (Florence JACQUET, fjacquet@grignon.inra.fr). The project is governed by a Steering Committee and administered by a Management Committee. See below, all the partners contact and role.

The Steering Committee (SC) is the highest decision making body which will survey the development of ARIMNet, analyse its results and guarantee the relevance of the whole process to the objectives for which it has been built. The SC will be composed of one representative of each consortium member. It will be responsible for:

strategic orientations and decisions regarding the implementation of the project;
decision on programmes which will benefit from joint and trans-national activities;
monitoring and evaluation of progress made and result achieved by the different WP;
guidance and supervision of the work done by the Coordinator;
approval of the financial and administrative reports before submission to the Commission.

The Steering Committee will be chaired by Italy (Ministero delle Politiche Agricole, Alimentari e Forestali), the Coordinator acting as the Secretary of this Committee.

Chaired by the Coordinator, the Management Committee (MC) is in charge of the general management of the ERA-Net. It would be composed of the Coordinator, the Work Packages Leaders (WPL) and the deputy Work Package Leaders (dWPL). The MC will work under the SC to ensure smooth and timely implementation of the Annual Work plans approved by the SC. As such it will:

· assist the Coordinator in the implementation of the decisions of the SC in addressing technical and organisational tasks;

· guarantee a narrow coordination among the different activities;

· provide mutual assistance and coordination between the WP Leaders and between WP Leaders and the Tasks Leaders for achieving their objectives;

· facilitate the communication between the different partners and tasks.

CIHEAM at a glance

Founded in 1962, the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) is an intergovernmental organisation comprising thirteen member countries from the Mediterranean Basin (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey).

CIHEAM is made up of a General Secretariat based in Paris and four Mediterranean Agronomic Institutes (MAI) located in Bari (Italy), Chania (Greece), Montpellier (France) and Zaragoza (Spain).

In pursuing its three central missions (education, research and cooperation) CIHEAM has come to be recognised as an authority in its fields of activity: Mediterranean agriculture, food and sustainable rural development.

At present, Abdelaziz Mougou is President of CIHEAM and Bertrand Hervieu is Secretary General.

ICARDA

Established in 1977, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is one of the 15 centers strategically located all over the world and supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). With its main research station and offices based in Aleppo, Syria, ICARDA works through a network of partnerships with national, regional and international institutions, universities, non-governmental organizations and ministries in the developing world; and with advanced research institutes in industrialized countries
